Miami Dolphins quarterback Malik Willis has received some praise from a former NFL signal caller.
The Miami Dolphins entered the 2026 NFL season with a big decision to make at the quarterback position. Would they choose to cut ties with Tua Tagovailoa or give him another chance?
It was clear that the Dolphins were already zeroed in on that decision. They opted to part ways with Tagovailoa, who ended up signing with the Atlanta Falcons as a free agent.
To replace him, Miami went out and signed former Green Bay Packers backup quarterback Malik Willis to a lucrative three-year, $67.5 million contract.
Over the last two years, Willis has been one of the best backup quarterbacks in the NFL. He was called into game action in each year due to injuries suffered by Jordan Love. In that playing time, Willis played very well.
With that being said, the new Dolphins' starting quarterback has received some praise from former NFL signal caller Chase Daniel.
"The Malik Willis really film surprised me," Daniel wrote on X. "The arm talent is legit. The pocket feel is way better than people think & there’s real upside here for the Dolphins."
He continued on, stating that he thinks Miami made a smart decision by signing Willis.
"Miami took a smart swing. Now the big question is what this looks like when the season kicks off."
Willis has been given an uphill battle to climb right off the bat. The Dolphins decided to trade away star wide receiver Jaylen Waddle to the Denver Broncos earlier this offseason. There is no true No. 1 wideout on the roster in Miami right now.
Despite the uphill battle, Willis simply thankful for the opportunity to prove that he can be an NFL starting quarterback.
Last season with the Packers, Willis threw for 422 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions, while completing 85.7 percent of his passes and running for 123 yards and two more touchdowns. Back in 2024, he completed 74.1 percent of his passes for 550 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. He also rushed for 138 yards and another score.
Hopefully, the move to replace Tagovailoa with Willis pays off. It was an aggressive swing, but Willis has an impressive arm and will now have a chance to show that talent week in and week out as a starter.
