Miami Dolphins starting quarterback Malik Willis has been playing at a higher level than some may realize so far this year.
When the Miami Dolphins signed quarterback Malik Willis to a lucrative three-year, $67.5 million contract during NFL free agency, the reaction was split. Some felt that he could be a long-term options, while others expected him to be a bust.
So far this season, the Dolphins have continued struggling on the field. Through seven weeks, they hold a 1-5 record.
Even though the season has not come with a lot of wins, Miami picked up its first victory of the season in Week 7 action against the New York Jets. Willis played well to pull off the win.
Against the Jets, the 27-year-old quarterback completed 14 of his 21 pass attempts for 208 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. He also chipped in with eight carries for 37 yards and another touchdown.
Following Week 7, Willis has thrown for 1,057 yards on the year to go along with four touchdowns, four interceptions, and a 57.6 completion percentage. He has racked up 223 yards and three touchdowns on the ground as well.
Underdog NFL took to X to share an intriguing statistic about Willis this season. He is in impressive company when it comes to one specific area.
Willis is one of just four quarterbacks this season with at least 1,000 passing yards and 200 rushing yards. The other quarterbacks on the list are Buffalo Bills superstar Josh Allen, New England Patriots star Drake Maye, and Cleveland Browns signal caller Deshaun Watson.
Granted, being on that list doesn't mean that Willis has been a star. There are plenty of areas for him to improve, but Miami can't be too upset with what it has seen from him.
Taking into account that Willis is producing the numbers without an elite supporting cast is another win. The Dolphins have a lot of work to do to build a legitimate offense around the quarterback.
Only time will tell what the future has in store for Willis in Miami. So far, he has performed admirably and has given the Dolphins reason to believe that he could be a long-term option.
Originally drafted at No. 86 overall in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans, Willis' career has been a rollercoaster. He seems to be leveling things out this season in Miami.
Next up for the Dolphins will be a Week 8 matchup at home against the rival Patriots. Willis has his work cut out for him to lead Miami to its second straight win.
