Dolphins rookies shine in Buccaneers win cover image

The Miami Dolphins' rookies took center stage in what was a commanding win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Miami Dolphins secured their seventh win of the season, which was in large part due to the young players on the team.

Multiple rookies took center stage and showcased some great skills that should excite the Dolphins moving forward.

The first of these rookies who elevated their game is rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers. Ewers had a rough first NFL start in Week 16, putting together a performance of 20-for-30 attempts, 260 yards, and two interceptions.

Most of the yardage came during garbage time, which did not help Ewers appear to be the answer for the Dolphins. However, Week 17 painted a much different story.

Ewers had full command of the offense, throwing some great passes downfield, including a bomb to Theo Wease Jr. The rookie signal caller ended the day with 14-for-22 passing attempts, 172 yards, and two touchdowns. He ended the day with an 118.0 passer rating.

Speaking of Ewers' favorite scout team target, Wease had the 63-yard bomb touchdown. Though that was his only pass of the day, it counted in a big way.

The Dolphins' offense wasn't the only unit that benefited from good rookie play. Defensive tackle Zeek Biggers took full advantage of his special teams play, blocking a would-be field goal for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Joining Biggers with some excellent play is safety Jason Marshall Jr. With Minkah Fitzpatrick out, Marshall got some extended play in Sunday's win.

Marshall secured eight total tackles, a tackle for loss, two passes defended, and an interception.

Despite the final offensive drive for the Buccaneers that nearly led to a fourth-quarter comeback, the Dolphins showed up in a big way. The younger players used their opportunity to start and expand their roles by showing up with some excellent production.

Miami has their season finale against the New England Patriots in Week 18, and head coach Mike McDaniel might allow more snaps for these young players. Considering the expected changes that can come in 2026, it is smart for the team to see what the young talent can do.

Ewers has received a three-game audition after Tua Tagovailoa was benched. The former Texas product can make a name for himself by showing some good skills in these final games.

A new general manager will be hired and its important for the Dolphins to take stock in their rookies and younger players, and they did just that with their win against the Buccaneers.
