The Miami Dolphins have made two roster moves, one of which is signing a former first-round pick in Clelin Ferrell.
Training camp is here, and the Miami Dolphins have not wasted time bringing in some new players. The team announced edge Clelin Ferrell has been signed, while they also waived defensive tackle Khalil Saunders.
Pass rush remains one of the biggest questions for the Dolphins in 2026, and adding some quality depth pieces certainly helps.
Ferrell is a former first-round pick, as he was drafted fourth overall by the then-Oakland Raiders in 2019. He would spend four seasons with the team.
As a member of the Raiders, Ferrell made an immediate impact, starting in 16 games in 2019 and bringing in 4.5 sacks. He followed that up with two in 2020, but his performance began to dip.
During the 2022 season, the Raiders announced that they would not pick up his fifth-year option, leading to him becoming a free agent in 2023. Ferrell would then sign with the San Francisco 49ers.
Ferrell picked up 3.5 sacks with the 49ers but stayed only one season. He would sign with the Washington Commanders in 2024, play half a season with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2025, and re-sign with the 49ers in late 2025.
Throughout his seven years, Ferrell has secured 57 starts, 12 passes defended, four forced fumbles, 21 sacks, and 184 total tackles.
The Dolphins are aiming for Chop Robinson to have a big year as the team's lead pass rusher. Beyond him are Josh Uche and David Ojabo. While Ferrell could theoretically be guaranteed a 53-man roster spot, he will certainly have to work for it.
Miami has brought in a ton of low-cost veterans since general manager Jon-
Eric Sullivan took over, and the idea is to get "younger and cheaper," as he so eloquently put it. That appears to be the case, and expect that more players will be brought in.
That is the usual case for teams looking to have the most quality and competition on their rosters. Ferrell may or may not be with the team come Week 1, but there is nothing lost from allowing him to try.
Saunders is an undrafted free agent who was signed by the Dolphins following the 2026 NFL Draft. He played for Kentucky, appearing in 51 games and securing 12 sacks.
There is a chance Saunders could land on another team, but his time in Miami appears to be done.
