The Miami Dolphins have been predicted to land a star pass rusher from the SEC in the 2027 NFL Draft.
The 2027 NFL Draft is a long ways off, but analysts have already begun releasing way-too-early mock drafts. For the Miami Dolphins, the 2027 draft is already looking like a pivotal class.
Heading into the 2026 season, the Dolphins simply aren't expected to win many games. They are expected to have a top-five pick in the draft next offseason.
Assuming those expectations turn into reality, Miami will have a chance to draft a franchise-caliber player early in the 2027 draft. What direction the team chooses to go with that pick remains a mystery, but there are some obvious needs already that could be addressed.
One of those needs comes on the defensive side of the football. The Dolphins will need to add more pass rushing at some point in the near future.
Keeping that in mind, one analyst has come up with a suggestion for Miami that would make a ton of sense.
Deadspin's Nick Pedone has released a new 2027 mock draft. He had the Dolphins using the No. 2 overall pick on Texas Longhorns standout pass rusher Colin Simmons.
"Another team that needs help everywhere, especially defensively, Simmons is a can’t miss target for the Dolphins," Pedone wrote.
"The Dolphins would’ve loved Smith to be available to better support Malik Willis. But assuming he’s off the board, Miami could help defensive-minded head coach Jeff Haffley (assuming he’s still employed) with an absolute gamewrecker in Simmons."
Simmons has wreaked havoc on opposing offenses throughout his first two years at Texas. He has legitimate NFL superstar talent and would be well worth the No. 2 overall pick for Miami.
If the Dolphins happened to end up with the No. 1 overall pick, Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith would be the clear pick. However, at No. 2, Simmons would be an excellent consolation prize.
Throughout his first two seasons with the Longhorns, Simmons has racked up 91 tackles, 21 sacks, six forced fumbles, an interception, and four defended passes.
Obviously, it's still way too early to have any clue where Miami will pick or who will be available. But, Simmons is a name worth watching throughout the 2026 college football season as a potential target for the Dolphins.
