Don Shula remains the most winningest coach in NFL history with 328 regular season wins. The legendary Miami Dolphins head coach was also the leader when the team was etched in history as the only team to go undefeated and win the Super Bowl in 1972.
Shula set the benchmark for the Dolphins in the 1970s and 1980s, but the team has since struggled after the retirement of Dan Marino back in 1999. Maybe the organization needs another Shula in the building, and that could happen if the team hires Chris Shula.
Chris is the grandson of Don, and has emerged as one of the most exciting head coaching candidates. He currently serves as the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams, and his name is starting to emerge as the next young and dynamic head coach.
Chris can now take in interviews with the Wild Card round done with, and the Dolphins are already planning on interviewing him.
The news broke from NFL insider Tom Pelissero, which indicated that the Dolphins have reached out.
"Here’s a fun one: The Dolphins have requested an interview with Rams DC Chris Shula for their head coaching job, per source.
"Shula — the grandson of legendary Dolphins coach Don Shula — is eligible to interview next week after the Rams’ wild card game," Pelissero wrote.
Granted, the Dolphins are interviewing a multitude of candidates for their open head coach position, but Chris Shula will also get a look.
Shula has become a popular name once again, and the Tennessee Titans have also requested to interview the defensive minded coach.
Miami is currently targeting some high-profile candidates. They completed an interview with Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, and they have requested Shula, Robert Saleh, and Kevin Stefanski.
The latter two have already served as a head coach. There are also reports that the Dolphins contacted John Harbaugh, but that might be a longshot.
Further reports have indicated Harbaugh is paying attention to the team's current quarterback situation, and the Dolphins do not have an ideal one. The former Baltimore Ravens head coach is reportedly researching Jaxson Dart and Cam Ward, placing him as a potential for the Titans or New York Giants position.
Either way, there is a wealth of huge candidates for the Dolphins to choose from. They recently hired former Green Bay Packers VP of player personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan as general manager, and he is busy with the front office in finding the team's next head coach.
