Mike McDaniel was surprisingly let go by the Miami Dolphins owner, Stephen Ross, and after a host of interviews, he joined the Los Angeles Chargers as offensive coordinator.
While the coaching staff is up to Jim Harbaugh, McDaniel likely has some big control over his new offensive staff, which could include former Dolphins head coach Adam Gase.
Gase was the Dolphins' head coach from 2016 to 2018, posting a 23-25 record in that time, and one playoff berth.
Following the conclusion of the 2018 season, Gase was fired, and he would then join the New York Jets. He only lasted two seasons with New York after a disastrous 9-23 record.
Since the 2020 season, Gase has not been heard from. No NFL team has hired him.
Gase did some work with The 33rd Team and also visited the Denver Broncos on occasion between 2023 and 2025, but was not offered any sort of full-time employment.
That may change, as Gase is being considered for an offensive role on the Chargers alongside McDaniel.
Per CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz, Gase is being targeted by the Chargers.
"Former #Jets and #Dolphins head coach Adam Gase has emerged as a possibility to be hired by the #Chargers in an offensive assistant coach role, sources tell @CBSSports. Last coached in 2020 when he was with the Jets. Before Miami and the Jets, he was an offensive coordinator for the Bears and Broncos," Zenitz wrote.
Zenitz also indicated that the role Gase is being considered for is pass game coordinator.
The news of his being hired has not yet broken, but it would be his first full-time coaching job since the 2020 season. As Zenitz indicated, he was offered offensive coordinator positions with the Chicago Bears and Denver Broncos.
Harbaugh is not a coach who would allow just anyone on his staff. Bringing in McDaniel will be huge for Justin Herbert and the run game with Omarion Hampton.
Clearly, Gase still has a lot to offer in the coaching department, and his joining forces with another former Dolphins head coach would lead to even more headlines.
