Jets to hire former Dolphins defensive backs coach Ryan Slowik cover image

The Miami Dolphins have lost another coach to an AFC East rival, as Ryan Slowik is reportedly joining Aaron Glenn's staff with the New York Jets.

As Miami Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley continues to round out his coaching staff, more coaches on Mike McDaniel's staff continue to find jobs elsewhere.

The latest is defensive backs and pass game specialist Ryan Slowik, the brother of current Dolphins offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik. Ryan is joining the New York Jets, where he will now be the safeties coach for Aaron Glenn.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported on the hiring, stating:

"#Jets coach Aaron Glenn continues to build out his staff, this time hiring Ryan Slowik as their safeties coach, source says. Slowik joins NYJ following four seasons with the #Dolphins. Other NFL teams have looked at Slowik as a future defensive coordinator."

As Rapoport indicated in his post on X, Slowik has been rising through the coaching ranks and is viewed as a future defensive coordinator.

Slowik spent the four seasons with the Dolphins, initially being hired in 2022 as a senior defensive assistant. He would be promoted to outside linebackers coach in 2023 and finally as defensive backs coach and pass game specialist.

Bobby might have wanted his brother to remain on the Dolphins staff with him, but that is not the case. Hafley brought in Jahmile Addae to serve as the cornerbacks coach for Miami, which is likely why Ryan has found work elsewhere.

The usual case for a new regime change is that the new head coach puts together their own staff. There are times when there are holdover coaches, such as Bobby Slowik, but that does not happen that often.

A regime change is needed when things become stagnant, and the Dolphins have not had a true reset in over 10 years. With Hafley and general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan in place, a mostly new coaching staff and front office have been put in place as well.

The Dolphins are nearing their completed coaching staff, and they will then transition into evaluating talent for the upcoming free agency period. Ryan now joins the Jets and could find success there, considering his knowledge of how Miami operates in the secondary.
