The Miami Dolphins put up a fight against the Patriots in Week 8, but the effort simply wasn't enough.
The Miami Dolphins entered their Week 8 matchup against the AFC East rival New England Patriots as heavy underdogs. No one gave them much of a chance to hang with the reigning AFC champions.
While the Dolphins ended up losing the game, they certainly made things interesting.
At the final whistle, Miami ended up losing by a score of 24-19. Even though a win would have been a much better result, the Dolphins should be proud of the effort they put in.
Jeff Hafley and company dropped to 1-6 with the loss, while the Patriots improved to 5-3.
Malik Willis put together another strong performance for Miami. He completed 21 of his 32 pass attempts for 211 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. Wills was quiet on the ground with just two yards on one attempt.
Leading the ground game was Ollie Gordon II, who carried the football 19 times for 69 yards. Jaylen Wright chipped in two carries for five yards.
Through the air, the Dolphins saw Kevin Coleman Jr. lead the charge with three receptions for 46 yards and a touchdown. Greg Dulcich caught four passes for 43 yards, Caleb Douglas chipped in four receptions for 43 yards, and Malik Washington caught five passes for 40 yards and a touchdown. Chris Bell also caught four passes for 31 yards.
On the defensive side of the football, Miami recorded three sacks against New England star quarterback Drake Maye. Chop Robinson record two of those sacks with the other belonging to former Patriots' defensive end Josh Uche.
Jordyn Brooks had another big game from a tackling perspective with 11.
Even though the Dolphins did not find a way to pull off the upset win, the performance gives hope for the future. Fans never expected Miami to win, but only losing by five points and making the Patriots work for everything they got was a positive sign.
It was more proof that Hafley has the team playing a good brand of football.
Next up for the Dolphins will be a Week 9 matchup at home against Detroit Lions. The Miami defense will have its work cut out for them against the high-powered Lions' offense featuring Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Jameson Williams.
For a franchise in a rebuilding phase, this is exactly the kind of performance the team looks for. It's the kind of game that a team could build upon.
