Assistant coaches Dolphins HC Jeff Hafley could target for his new staff cover image

New Miami Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley will assuredly get busy hiring his new staff, and these are some coaches he may target.

The Miami Dolphins have their new head coach in former Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley.

Hafley will become the organization's 14th head coach, and while the team will not introduce him or new general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan until Thursday, both have work to do in terms of hiring a staff.

That is especially true for Hafley, who will likely bring in his own coaching and assistant staff, and it is expected that some assistant coaches may follow him from Green Bay.

With that in mind, here are some potential coordinators Hafley may target to add to this staff.

Offense

One of the major positions that Hafley will need to have a solid coordinator in is offense. He is an offensive mind, and there will be a need for a solid offensive coordinator to mold whoever the quarterback may be while guiding players like De'Von Achane and Jaylen Waddle.

Adam Stenavich is one of the most obvious choices. He currently serves as the offensive coordinator for the Packers, and with Matt LaFleur calling plays, it would make sense for Hafley to potentially lure him over.

Another option on the Packers staff currently is passing game coordinator Jeff Vrabel. Vrable has worked his way up with LaFleur from being an offensive assistant to passing game coordinator.

Defense

Keeping with the Packers theme, a coach that has a direct connection to Hafley is linebackers coach Sean Duggan, who followed Hafley to the NFL as a defensive assistant.

Duggan worked as the co-defensive coordinator at Boston College when Hafley was head coach. He could potentially be pried away from Green Bay and given a promotion on Hafley's staff for the Dolphins.

Tem Lukabu is also a potential fit and serves as the linebackers coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Lukabu was the defensive coordinator at Boston when Hafley was running the show.

There is a wealth of candidates that will likely be interviewed, but these are some of the current coaches that have connections to Hafley through his time at Boston and beyond.

One thing of note is that the NFL has a new rule in place that began in 2020, which stipulates that assistants cannot make lateral moves while under contract. So, if Duggan were to be asked to be the linebackers coach for the Dolphins, he would have to get permission from the Packers to do so.

After Hafley is introduced as the new Dolphins head coach on Thursday, his job will shift directly into putting together his new staff.
