A look at the breakdown and position outlook on the quarterbacks for the Miami Dolphins.
The Miami Dolphins will have a lot of roster decisions to make through the offseason program, training camp, and preseason. Though there are months before those decisions will be finalized, it is time to start breaking down the possibilities.
That said, here is a way too early look at who will be under center for the Dolphins in 2026, which may not be a huge surprise. However, the backup position could face some turnover if the team decides to bring in a veteran.
Quarterbacks on the Roster
The Dolphins currently have four quarterbacks on the roster:
Malik Willis, Quinn Ewers, Cam Miller, and Mark Gronowski.
Dolphins Projected Starter
There is no secret that the Dolphins brought in Willis to be the starter. There has been plenty said regarding "competition," but the team handed out the former Green Bay Packers backup a three-year, $67.5 million deal.
Willis has only six starts under his belt, but this has worked in his favor. General manager Jon-Eric Sullivan indicated this presents the four-season veteran more like a rookie due to his limited starts.
Head coach Jeff Hafley has also recently spoke about the young passer on "The Richard Sherman Podcast."
"I got to see him play and he's competitive, he's tough, he can throw the ball, he's accurate, he's really accurate down the field and he's really athletic. I mean, he's strong. He can make plays with his feet and when he breaks the pocket, he's really accurate. And then on top of all that, I love the person. Um, on the field, off the field, he's got this unique way that he leads. He's not this outspoken, loud guy, but people kind of gravitate to him. So, to get a quarterback like that."
Willis is the projected starter and stands to be unless Quinn Ewers somehow outplays him in training camp and preseason.
Projected Backup Quarterback
As stated above, the Dolphins may choose to bring in a veteran passer, though that may not be the case given their current cap space situation. That said, the backup position could be a lock for Ewers.
Ewers took over as starter when Tua Tagovailoa was benched towards the end of the 2023 season. Despite being thrown into the proverbial fire, the Texas rookie did a decent job, throwing 622 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions.
Ewers might be able to carve out a more significant role for himself as a backup for the team, and potentially turn that into a better opportunity down the line.
Third-string Option
The third string option, as it stands, will be between Cam Miller and UDFA Mark Gronowski.
Miller was signed by the Dolphins in January off the Las Vegas Raiders practice squad, and could potentially be the team's third-string emergency option. However, he will now be against Gronkowski, who signed as an undrafted free agent out of Iowa.
Gronowski spent his first four college seasons with South Dakota State, where he threw 10,308 yards, 93 touchdowns, and 20 interceptions. With Iowa, he threw 1,741 yards, 10 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
Miller spent all five seasons of his collegiate career with North Dakota State, where he has a career total of 9,720 yards, 81 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions.
In terms of who may end up being the third option, it is a toss-up. Both Miller and Gronowski will be up against one another in training camp and preseason, but it is almost a guarantee that the Dolphins will take three quarterbacks into the regular season.
