Grading the Miami Dolphins' making a move to trade up to take San Diego State cornerback Chris Johnson.

The Miami Dolphins pulled off their second draft move, instead moving up three spots from No. 30 overall to No. 27 with the San Francisco 49ers. The team gave up the No. 90 overall to move up, but got back the No. 138 pick.

After moving up, the Dolphins officially selected San Diego State cornerback Chris Johnson.

Analysis of Grade for Chris Johnson Pick

The Dolphins have needed to spruce up the secondary for months, and this goes back to the 2025 season. After losing Artie Burns, Storm Duck, and Kader Kohou, the team brought in Jack Jones and Rasul Douglas as stop-gap options.

Douglas had a strong rebound year, but is unlikely to return to the team due to general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan wanting to rebuild through the draft. Enter Johnson.

The young corner excels in man and zone coverage, and has the ability to play the ball like a wide receiver would. Per Pro Football Focus, Johnson only gave up a 16.1 passer rating in 2025 with four interceptions and five passes defended.

Johnson could be a prospect that the Dolphins look to use as a safety, or even as both a main defender and special teams ace, as he performed well in both. With over 600 snaps on special teams, he also excelled as a gunner.

Johnson may not have been as highly-rated as LSU's Mansoor Delane, but he is a strong and rangy cornerback that gives the Dolphins an immediate upgrade in their secondary.

Johnson could be a day-one starter, and has the motor to set the tone in the secondary for the Dolphins. With his high motor, he can close the gap on route runners while also stepping inside to help with run play coverage.

Miami has been preaching on finding the kind of football players that are passionate, strong, and have strong character, and that is Johnson.

The Dolphins having to give up a third-round pick to land Johnson may be a bit suspect, as he could have been there at No. 30 overall, especially as the team did not use their fifth-rounders acquired from the Dallas Cowboys. Still, this is a solid pick for Miami.
