Miami Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley pointed to his biggest request from players, which could be the biggest benefit that will help turn the team around.

The tenet of discipline matters a great deal in sports, especially in football. If a player is out of position, not giving it their all, or if something is amiss, it could lead to a missed opportunity. This is why Miami Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley has preached a major request to his players: effort.

When speaking to the media, Hafley once again spoke about what measurables matter to him as a head coach, and he indicated that effort is the biggest objective.

"I watch effort when I watch the film on every single play," Hafley said Thursday. "I meet with the team every morning and I go through probably 30 to 40 clips on both sides of the ball, and I talk about ball security. I talk about taking the ball away. I talk about fundamentals and technique. I pull out plays on both sides of the ball, and I show good execution, poor execution, why it happened."

Hafley has been giving everyone an inside track on how his mind works and how he operates as a head coach. He indicated that he does not choose to yell at players because that does not get the point across.

Instead, he zeroes in on effort on tape and observing players in real-time. What can make or break a play is the effort that each player has or doesn't have.

There has been plenty said regarding the Dolphins and the way in which the team operates in recent years. Just last year, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa essentially called out players for not attending or being late to team-held meetings.

This callout did not go over well in the press, and former and current players appeared to push back on what Tagaovailoa was speaking about.

Naturally, this sort of divide is never good in a locker room, but it may be boiled down to effort. This is what Hafley has continued to preach, and what may be the main component for this Miami team to succeed in 2026.

There is a hidden benefit that the Dolphins will get to see over most teams in the NFL. For one, this team is the youngest roster in the league.

Having the youngest roster does have a benefit, but can also be a negative. Inexperienced players will get a chance to show what they can do, but unproven players at multiple starting positions, veteran or otherwise, can lead to some big losses.

The secondary benefit is that the veterans who may not play up to par will be replaced by their younger counterparts or the awaiting free agents that have yet to be signed. The NFL is about opportunity, and the Dolphins have a team that is jam-packed with unproven players.

This includes veterans who have not quite had a big splash, and rookies and undrafted free agent rookies who are to prove themselves.

Hafley speaking about effort may sound like a standard answer, but he is speaking about the overall nature of how a player carries themselves. If there is a clear-cut high-level of effort on each play, and a need to get better, those are the players who have a higher chance to remain on the team and carve out a significant role.
