After falling to the Denver Broncos in Week 5, the Philadelphia Eagles had an opportunity to bounce back with a strong showing on a short week against the NFC East rival New York Giants.
Entering the game, the Eagles were viewed as heavy favorites by most. However, what happened during the game left the team with many more questions than answers.
When the final whistle blew, Philadelphia fell to the Giants by a final score of 34-17.
Now, the Eagles are facing a major crossroads. What kind of team are they going to be? Will they be a Super Bowl contender and defend their title from last season, or will they fold and turn into a mediocre football team?
So far this season through six games, Philadelphia has not looked like the dominant team it was a year ago. There are very real reasons to be concerned about the Eagles at this point.
A weekly story all year long has been the rumored disconnected and souring relationship between Jalen Hurts and A.J. Brown. It got to a point where Saquon Barkley, Hurts, and Brown all had a meeting together to try and work things out. This game did not show any improvement.
Granted, Hurts completed 24 of his 33 pass attempts for 283 yards, a touchdown, and an interceptions. Barkley ran for 58 yards on 12 carries. Brown caught six passes for 80 yards.
On paper, the numbers don't look too bad. But, the final score showed a team that was not prepared to face a team that they should have beaten.
Nick Sirianni has his work cut out for him. He will have to figure out how to bring the fire back to the Eagles. They have not shown much fire at all so far this season.
Even late in the game against New York, Philadelphia players looked nonchalant about the loss. That isn't what fans want to see from a team who should be a Super Bowl favorite.
It's just one loss and that doesn't make or break a season. The Eagles are still 4-2 and are one of the better teams in the NFC. However, losing to the Giants was an eye-opening loss and one that will force Philadelphia to take a long look in the mirror.
Hopefully, the Eagles are able to come up with some answers. They will face off against the Minnesota Vikings on the road in their next outing on October 19. Fans will be expecting a much better team to show up in that game than the one that took the field tonight.
