Eagles ‘Best-Case Scenario’ on Defense Has Exciting Super Bowl Ceiling

Ever since the Philadelphia Eagles hired Vic Fangio as their defensive coordinator, the defense has been one of the best in the NFL.

That's the case the last two seasons, as they've won the Super Bowl in 2024 on the backs of an incredible defense, and their 2025 defense carried a terrible offense to a playoff game.

But, with some new faces in the building, and others now gone, how does this defense project for the 2026 season? Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report revealed the best-case scenario for the Eagles' defense, and it could have a Super Bowl on tap.

"The best-case scenario for the Eagles is simple enough: the sort of dominant defensive season the team rode all the way to a victory in Super Bowl LIX," Davenport writes. "That's a result well within Philadelphia's range of outcomes..."

Looking at this defense compared to years past, the roster has undergone some big changes, but for the most part, this is a great unit.

Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean are still here, but now they've added Riq Woolen to the secondary. This might be the best cornerback trio in the entire NFL.

Even after losing Jaelan Phillips to the Carolina Panthers in free agency, the Eagles' edge rusher room with Nolan Smith, Jalyx Hunt, Jonathan Greenard, and a bunch of other intriguing depth options should be good enough to win in 2026.

Add in Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter, and Moro Ojomo along the interior of the DL, and the Eagles' front is one of the best in the league.

Zach Baun and Jihaad Campbell are a fun linebacker duo, and even though losing Nakobe Dean stings, Jeremiah Trotter is a quality backup, and Campbell is more than competent as a fill-in option.

The only real question mark is at safety with Reed Blankenship gone in free agency, and the options outside of Andrew Makuba coming off an injury are very lackluster.

But, overall, this defense has Super Bowl upside, and the best-case scenario for this defense would be one of the best in the league, capable of leading this team, even with a sub-par offense, to another Super Bowl ring.
