The No. 3 seed Philadelphia Eagles fell to the No. 6 seed San Francisco 49ers, 23-19, in the Wild Card Round.
It was a quick start for the 49ers, as they marched down the field in six plays, with Brock Purdy connecting with Demarcus Robinson for a two-yard score.
The Eagles quickly responded with Dallas Goedert taking in a rare rushing touchdown. However, Philadelphia didn't tie it up, as kicker Jake Elliot missed the extra point.
A 16-play 94-yard drive with a Goedert touchdown, this time through the air, gave the Eagles a 13-7 lead in the second quarter. The 49ers were able to get a field goal, but Philadelphia held a three-point lead at the half.
After a three-and-out for the Eagles offense to start the third quarter, cornerback Quinyon Mitchell came away with an interception. That turnover didn't result in points as Philadelphia punted it right back to San Francisco.
Elliot made a 41-yard field goal toward the end of the third quarter, giving Philadelphia a 16-10 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The 49ers ran a trick play with wide receiver Jauan Jennings connecting with running back Christian McCaffrey for a 29-yard touchdown to give them a 17-16 advantage.
Mitchell came away with another interception on Brock Purdy in the fourth, and Philadelphia was able to get a field goal to recapture the lead.
However, the 49ers responded as Purdy found McCaffrey for a four-yard touchdown with 2:54 to go, giving San Francisco a 23-19 lead.
That gave Jalen Hurts and the Eagles offense three timeouts to march down and win the game. Hurts was clutch early in the drive, converting a 4th-and-5 pass to Goedert for 15 yards. Philadelphia got down to the 21-yard line, but a 4th-and-11 pass fell incomplete, ending the game.
Elliot's missed extra point loomed large, as the Eagles were in field-goal range and could've tied it rather than going for a touchdown.
This is a disappointing end to an underwhelming season for Philadelphia. While they still won the NFC East, they didn't live up to expectations to defend their Super Bowl title.
The Eagles now enter the offseason, and there will be plenty of question marks to address if they are to have a bounce-back season in 2026.
