After moving on from superstar wide receiver AJ Brown, the Philadelphia Eagles have attempted to replace him in the aggregate.
The idea that Brown won't be missed is wrong, even if he didn't always seem engaged and wasn't the best teammate. At the end of the day, if we're going based on pure talent, Brown is still one of the top 5 to 10 wide receivers in the NFL, and for that reason alone, he's going to be missed.
Still, that doesn't take away from the fact that the Eagles have one of the best wide receivers in the NFL still on their roster in DeVonta Smith.
Smith has been working as a WR2 over the past few years, but now with an opportunity to get more targets, be the focal point of an offense, and more, there's no reason why he can't turn into a true number one and end up being a top five to 10 guy in this league.
We all know that Smith has all the talent in the world to be just that, and according to the latest, the Eagles believe he's going to do just that. The only problem is they now need somebody to step up and replace what Smith did with Brown.
“DeVonta Smith is the new clear No. 1 receiver. The franchise has believed he’s been worthy of that distinction even when Brown was his teammate, and Smith’s volume is expected to rise this season. Smith was last the unquestioned top option in 2021.
“He said at the start of camp that he’s “a lot more mature” since then, with a better understanding of how to play. (He averaged more than 1,000 yards per season during that period.) One way to look at it is that the Eagles don’t need to replace Brown’s production; they need to replace Smith’s production if Smith is the Brown replacement,” Zach Berman wrote.
I would love to see a guy like Makai Lemon come in and make a major impact on offense.
While he's dealt with some injuries throughout the year, at least in the early stages of training camp, this is a guy with a boatload of talent.
He's not going to wow anybody with his physical tools, but he catches everything and should be a very productive player in the Eagles' offense.
