With training camp starting, the Philadelphia Eagles had one of the most interesting situations to watch around the entire NFL. There was hope that the Eagles and star defensive lineman Jalen Carter would eventually reach an agreement on a contract extension, and it happened on Tuesday.
Carter agreed to a four-year, $152 million deal.
Carter, undoubtedly one of the better players on the defensive side of the football in the entire NFL, is now with a contract, despite a lot of chatter about something potentially happening during the offseason, including a potential trade out of Philadelphia.
With training camp starting, there were questions about Carter not attending. If he attended, there were thoughts about him not practicing. However, that’s one question the Eagles now have figured out.
“Nick Sirianni was asked if that was injury and/or contract related, and he declined to answer. Unlike a lot of other teams around the NFL, the Eagles have largely avoided contract drama during training camp. Carter is a "hold in" candidate. (In case you're unfamiliar what "hold in" means, a common thing players with contract beefs have done in recent years is show up to camp so they don't get fined, but they don't participate.)
“The Eagles have plenty of star players on defense, but Carter is the guy who stirs the drink. We know what the defense looks like when Carter is at his best, and we saw at times last season that it's not as scary without him,” Jimmy Kempski wrote.
I've continued to say how much I didn’t agree with the decision the Eagles were making here regarding paying Carter. I believed he's one of the best defensive players in the NFL and should’ve been paid as such months ago.
There were certainly other factors at play here, but if the Eagles were trying to keep a really talented player around, they needed to pay him and give him what he was looking for.
Fast forward a few months, and Philadelphia did just that. I always had trust in Howie Roseman to get something done, but the chatter was getting loud.
