The Eagles won but didn't do enough.
It was a very interesting game for the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans out in Nashville.
Over the past few years, it feels like the Eagles always want to make things close with every team they play. At times, it almost feels like Philadelphia plays down to its competition.
For whatever reason, that’s just how things have unfolded, and while a win is a win, we often need to look more closely at the process. For the Eagles specifically, especially after last season, the offense not playing at the level we’re all hoping for is a bit concerning.
That was the case on Sunday, especially in the run game.
I’m trying to give them some credit because Saquon Barkley went down after just four rushing attempts, though he had just nine yards.
The Eagles then leaned on Tank Bigsby, who had 13 carries for 33 yards. Still, finishing with 89 rushing yards when this offense is supposed to be one of the best on the ground in the NFL is concerning, and it actually tied for the eighth-lowest total in the Nick Sirianni era.
“The run game that first-year offensive coordinator Sean Mannion’s system was supposed to rely on is still dragging the operation down. The Eagles averaged 2.8 yards per carry against the Titans, tied for eighth-lowest in the Sirianni era.
“Bigsby and Will Shipley combined for 20 carries and 57 rushing yards after Barkley’s injury, and Barkley, who returned in the second half, mustered nine yards on four carries. The Titans neutralized the Eagles’ wide-zone run concepts by bringing their safeties down along the edges and sending exotic blitz packages, as the Commanders had before them,” Brooks Kubena wrote.
Games like this are going to happen for Philadelphia, so I’m trying not to make it as big of a deal as it might need to be.
However, I also recognize that there were points last year when the team kept winning games, but we all knew that it wasn’t as good as its record indicated.
I’m curious to see how the offense looks over the next couple of weeks, but the run game is definitely something that I’m going to be watching.
