The Philadelphia Eagles dealt A.J. Brown to the New England Patriots this offseason on June 1 after months of rumors indicating such a deal was in the works.
While the Eagles received a solid return, which consisted of a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick, they still lost one of the better wide receivers in the NFL to a top Super Bowl contender in the Patriots.
To make things sting a little bit more, NFL.com analyst Bucky Brooks shared a long-shot prediction that would have Brown, in his first year with the Patriots, winning the NFL Offensive Player of the Year Award.
"With Brown slotted into the WR1 role -- and surrounded by a collection of pass catchers with diverse games (possession receiver Romeo Doubs, designated deep threat Kyle Williams, dirty-work specialist Mack Hollins) -- the three-time second-team All-Pro could produce a spectacular statline that pushes him close to the 2,000-yard mark," Brooks writes.
This would be a wildly productive season for Brown, whose best seasons during his NFL career have come with the Eagles, and he failed to eclipse 1,500 yards during the regular season.
Eagles fans are probably tired of hearing the disrespect for Jalen Hurts and all of the hype surrounding Brown joining the Patriots and Drake Maye.
But this prediction from Brooks might be the most egregious of all of the optimism for Brown as he leaves Hurts and the Eagles for Maye and the Patriots in a trade.
He had 1,003 yards last season, and his best year was 2022, when he recorded 1,496 yards and 11 touchdowns. Getting close to 2,000 yards would mean Brown puts up a top-10 all-time receiving season.
While it would be shocking if Brown didn't have a good year in the Patriots offense, this prediction would make the Eagles feel a good bit worse about trading their All-Pro WR, especially if he wound up winning Offensive Player of the Year in his first season away from Philadelphia.
The Eagles and Brown weren’t going to stick together, not after the falling out between the two sides. But that wouldn’t mean that there would be some regret if Brown had such an incredible year for the Patriots after this trade.
This prediction is a “long shot,” as it’s not very likely to happen. But if Brown did win the Offensive Player of the Year award, putting up a nearly 2,000-yard receiving season, it would only add fuel to the fire of Eagles and Hurts haters.
