After months of speculation surrounding the Philadelphia Eagles making a blockbuster trade for linebacker Jonathan Greenard, Philadelphia and the Minnesota Vikings agreed to a deal to do that on Friday night, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Greenard, one of the top edge rushers in the NFL, should be a very nice addition for this organization.
"Trade: Vikings are sending former Pro-Bowl LB Jonathan Greenard to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a third-round pick tonight (No. 98) and a third-round pick next year, per me and @rapsheet. Greenard and the Eagles reached agreement on a four-year, $100 million extension that includes $50 million fully guaranteed, per his agents Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey," Schefter wrote.
After losing Jaelan Phillips to the Carolina Panthers in a free agency deal earlier in the offseason, it was rather obvious that Philadelphia was going to add to its edge rushing group.
The Eagles knew they had to get better on that side of the ball, and Greenard will provide just that.
It's also not too surprising to see that Howie Roseman decided to move on from some of his draft picks, as moving on from a third-round pick in this year's draft and a third-round pick in next year's draft is certainly worth it for a player of Greenard's caliber.
I'd expect the Eagles to continue doing what's needed on both sides of the football throughout the remainder of this draft and in the rest of the offseason.
With a potential trade of AJ Brown coming, this can be one of the first moves that really gets the ball going in Philadelphia for this offseason.
Greenard has had his best seasons in two of the past three years, posting 12.5 sacks in 2023 and 12 sacks in 2024.
Vic Fangio does a great job on the defensive side of the football for the Eagles and he’ll love adding a player like the 28-year-old. After being selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Greenard now gets a very nice extension and gets to play for one of the top teams in the NFL.
