Eagles Make Interesting Jalen Hurts Adjustment Before Playoffs cover image

The Philadelphia Eagles have made a rather interesting decision with Jalen Hurts heading into the NFL playoffs.

All season long, Jalen Hurts has been the biggest question plaguing the Philadelphia Eagles. The quarterback's inconsistency has been the talk of the talk, and it has drawn ire from wide receiver A.J. Brown multiple times in 2025.

To combat that, the Eagles have made a rather interesting decision with Hurts in recent weeks, and ESPN's Bill Barnwell shed some light on it heading into the team's Wild Card Round playoff matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.

"The Eagles have quietly expanded Hurts' rushing volume in recent weeks, with the offense seemingly picking up one third-and-long per game with a quarterback draw," Barnwell wrote. "Leaving sneaks, scrambles and kneels aside, Hurts had just 10 designed runs through Week 10. The Eagles then gave him 17 designed runs over the next six games, yielding 100 yards and seven first downs."

Barnwell expects to see a healthy does of Hurts running the football this Sunday.

"After a week of rest and with the stakes raised, I would expect to see more Hurts in the QB run game, which adds another efficient play to the offense and helps make life easier for [Saquon] Barkley," Barnwell added.

Hurts totaled 421 rushing yards on the season, his lowest mark since finishing with 354 during his rookie campaign back in 2020 when he made just four starts. He also punched in just eight rushing touchdowns, the first time he didn't reach double figures since that rookie year.

By contrast, Hurts racked up 10, 13, 15 and 14 rushing scores, respectively, between 2021 and 2024.

On the 2025 campaign overall, Hurts threw for 3,224 yards, 25 touchdowns and six interceptions while completing 64.8 percent of his passes and posting a 98.5 passer rating.

For all of the talk about how poorly Hurts played for stretches this season, he set a career high in touchdown passes, so it wasn't all bad for the two-time Pro Bowler.

There is no question, however, that things just don't look quite right with Hurts for much of the year, and he even had two games where he didn't complete a single pass the entire second half. That most recently happened during Hurts' last game in Week 17, when he went 13-for-27 with 110 yards and a touchdown during a win over the Buffalo Bills.

Of course, Hurts and the Eagles are defending Super Bowl champions and have reached the Super Bowl twice in the last three seasons, so maybe they will kick it into gear here.
