The Philadelphia Eagles made some intriguing decisions with their initial 53-man roster, including keeping four quarterbacks.
The decision didn't really come as much of a surprise, as it was rather evident that Jalen Hurts and Cole Payton were going to be on the team. With the expectation that at least one of Andy Dalton or Tanner McKee was going to stick around, the Eagles decided it was best to keep both of them for the time being.
I'm a bit surprised, the more I think about it, that Dalton is still on the roster, but perhaps the Eagles are content to give a veteran an opportunity to come in if needed.
On that note, I'm curious who the Eagles would truly turn to if Hurts gets injured. He's going to be the guy until the wheels fall off, at least this season, but one injury could cause some questions in that quarterback room, ones the Eagles will ultimately have to answer.
While there's a lot that has to happen before the trade deadline, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Eagles eventually move on from one of these guys. At the very least, somebody like Dalton could probably be traded at any given moment depending on the package that comes back to Philadelphia.
One Bleacher Report writer recently predicted that McKee would be the one dealt, citing his possible trades a year ago.
“As tantalizing as McKee’s ceiling may be, the Eagles find themselves in a position where they can move on from this polarizing 26-year-old while still having a proven old hand to work directly behind Hurts and a long-term project to bring along if they keep both [Andy] Dalton and [Cole] Payton,” wrote Alex Kay.
“Given that McKee is entering the final year of his rookie deal and reportedly drew strong offers that included a Day 2 pick at last season’s trade deadline, it’s hard to see Philadelphia’s brass choosing to keep him beyond November.”
I think Philadelphia is in a position where, if it gets a decent return for McKee, it has to take it.
At the same time, we've already heard Howie Roseman talk multiple times about the value he has in the backup quarterback position, so for him to move on from one of his guys, he's likely going to get exactly what he wants in return.
