Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni was asked if Jonathan Greenard would play in Week 1.
New Philadelphia Eagles star Jonathan Greenard suited up for practice on 9/9 after being sidelined for all of training camp after suffering what the team described as a pec strain while lifting weights earlier in the summer.
The Eagles, who face the Washington Commanders in Week 1, don't know if Greenard will play.
"We'll see," Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni said. "I think all of our guys that have had some dings throughout training camp, they've worked their butts off...and he's worked his butt off. We'll see where that is by the end of the week."
The Eagles acquired Greenard from the Minnesota Vikings in April and signed the talented defender to a four-year, $100 million extension with $50 million guaranteed.
Greenard had three sacks in 12 games last season after a pair of double-digit sack campaigns the previous two years in Minnesota. He spent the first four years of his career with the Houston Texans before signing a four-year, $72 million deal with the Vikings in 2024.
Greenard recorded 12.5 sacks and was named to the Pro Bowl in his first season with the Vikings, but he was slowed by a shoulder injury that ultimately required season-ending surgery in 2025.
The Eagles' defense finished fifth in the NFL in scoring defense last season, giving up only 19.1 points per game. Philadelphia's 56.8% completion percentage allowed led the league, while its 75.4 passer rating ranked second.
Philadelphia signed Jalen Carter to a four-year, $152 million extension worth up to $160 million, including $106 million guaranteed, which now makes him the highest-paid defensive tackle in NFL history. Carter will now be under contract with the Eagles through the 2031 season.
Once Greenard is cleared to play, he and Carter project to be a lethal duo rushing the QB.
Philadelphia selected Carter with the ninth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Carter has 13.5 sacks, 66 solo tackles, 25 tackles for loss and 37 QB hits in 43 games. He made the Pro Bowl in 2024 and 2025 and helped the Eagles win the Super Bowl during the 2024 season against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Carter's 83 pass-rush wins as an interior lineman since 2023 are tied for the seventh most in the NFL.
