Sirianni and the Eagles will keep all of their options open.
Throughout the offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles didn't want to show their hand, at least when it came to announcing their backup quarterback. That's still the case at other positions, too: Landon Dickerson is injured, and Philadelphia doesn't want to announce his replacement on the offensive line.
For whatever reason, that's what the Eagles are going to do, and we just have to live with it.
Philadelphia eventually announced its backup quarterback plan, with Andy Dalton being the QB2.
At the time, it seemed like a questionable decision for the Eagles. There have been moments in Dalton's career when he's clearly looked like a very good player, but the reality is he just isn't that good at this stage of his career. It'll be interesting to see if Philadelphia actually allows him to come into a game if Jalen Hurts gets hurt, but it sounds like that's at least the plan, according to Nick Sirianni and the depth chart.
Speaking to reporters about why he decided to give Dalton the opportunity to be the backup, Sirianni said he just felt that Dalton was the best person for the job.
“We felt like he [Dalton] was the best person for the job, that won the job. That has no indication of how we feel of Tanner. We just, that's who won the job throughout camp," Sirianni said, per Athlon.
"But roles and spots on the depth chart are never set in stone. They're still competing, they're still working, and we'll be evaluating, like with everything, all the time. But at the end of the day, that's why.”
If there's one important thing to look at here, however, it's the fact that Sirianni suggested that nothing is set in stone just yet. If Dalton doesn't have good practices and Tanner McKee continues to show that he can be something for this offense in the future, it wouldn't be surprising to see him win the job eventually.
It's only going to be Week 2 on Sunday, so there's a lot to play out. Hopefully, the Eagles won't ever have to answer that questions, but it's likely that Hurts will get banged up, even if it's for a drive or two.
