Sirianni has to be careful.
It was an absolutely disgusting game for the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday morning in Week 5, dropping a game to the Jacksonville Jaguars that they had no business losing.
While Philadelphia has dealt with multiple injuries throughout the season, and that was certainly a factor in this loss, it's also important to recognize that they had won this game. The Eagles unfortunately couldn't take care of business when it mattered most, and much of that blame fell on head coach Nick Sirianni.
Sirianni clearly didn't think the Jaguars would march down the field with just 8 seconds remaining after Jake Elliott made a 48-yard kick to go up a point, but that is the NFL, and that's exactly what they did. It was unfortunate it got to that point, but this is something Sirianni has struggled with over the past couple of years.
It always feels like he makes coaching mistakes in big moments, even if other factors explain why Philadelphia plays this way.
"I didn't make the right decision, and I lost us that game, and that's what I said to our guys," Sirianni said, per ESPN. "What hurts there is the guys fought so hard, and then I don't make the decision that I should make at the end of the game and I cost us that game, and I put that one on me…
"It hurts in the sense of the guys fought their ass off and had a chance to win the game. And then for me to not make the right decision in that, you feel like you let everyone down," Sirianni said. "That will stick with me for a long time. All I know is I'll work my butt off to get better from it."
I don't want to say that Sirianni was the sole reason for the Eagles losing, but when the team had this much of an opportunity to win the game, and all it had to do was really let the clock run out a bit more, we'd be looking at a completely different situation if he did what he needed to do.
It's also interesting to think about how bad Philadelphia was in this game, yet it still had a chance to win. It's almost impossible to get a feel for what the Eagles are like right now.
Over the past couple of weeks, Philadelphia has looked like a decent team, but ultimately, we still have no idea what it really is right now.
The Eagles have to start winning games for us to truly understand what they might be, and until then, many questions will remain about Sirianni and the rest of the organization.
