While Philadelphia’s brutal season, its head coach knows he has to improve.
The Philadelphia Eagles had another disappointing Sunday, dropping 27-10 on Sunday Night Football to the Washington Commanders in Week 8.
The Eagles couldn't get anything going on either side of the ball, showing that something has to change soon if this team is going to be anything like what it was hoping for entering the season.
I think it's very fair to say at this point, at 2-6 and losing six straight, that the season just isn't going to go according to plan. There's a better chance that the Eagles are going to be a very below-average team for the remainder of the season than a great one, though it's also fair to question how this could impact the rest of the organization, and mainly, head coach Nick Sirianni.
I'm of the belief that none of this is really Sirianni's fault, specifically because of all the injuries that he's dealt with on both sides of the football.
When Sirianni has had a healthy team in the past, he's proven to us that he can be among the best coaches in the NFL, at least in terms of wins and losses.
If there's one positive thing about what Sirianni has done throughout this season, too, it's the fact that he's not trying to put the blame on anybody else.
There are tens of reasons as to why this Eagles team has struggled, and while he's part of it, ultimately, there's really not much a head coach can do when a team is dealing with this many injuries.
Instead of making that excuse, however, he said that this is his responsibility to fix and that everything that everybody sees on the field is something that he ultimately has to get control of.
“I take everything as my responsibility that happens out on that field. Everything. Obviously I am not doing a good enough job right now. I’ve got to do better,” Sirianni said, per Pro Football Talk.
“That falls on me,” Sirianni said. “With all the detail that’s not happening right now, I’ve got to try a different approach. That 100 percent is on me with how many of those issues are happening right now. I’ll do everything I can to do different things to get that point across.”
I'm glad to see Sirianni come out and take the high road on this instead of blaming everybody that he could. He knows that he's probably coaching for his job right now, though the Eagles organization likely already has told him what the situation is like. There were questions coming into this year about Sirianni's job, so to say that his job feels safe right now would be unfair.
With everything that's gone wrong throughout the year, it feels like Philadelphia could make a move at any given moment. Whether that ends up happening or not remains to be seen, but it at least feels like a possibility.
