Eagles' Sean Mannion Is Jalen Hurts' 1st OC Since College to Sit in Booth

Jalen Hurts has a new OC.

The Philadelphia Eagles hired Sean Mannion as their new OC in the offseason.

Mannion is a former NFL QB, so he's bonded with Jalen Hurts well.

However, there is one big change Hurts will have to get used to with Mannion.

In Week 1 against the Washington Commanders, Mannion will sit in the booth.

Hurts hasn't had a play caller sit upstairs since college.

"Just take it a day at a time and continue to work and experience work, build, work, let the chemistry develop naturally," Hurts said.

A talented runner and thrower, Hurts finished the 2025 season with 3,224 passing yards, 25 passing touchdowns, 421 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns. He completed 64.8% of his passes.

The Eagles signed Hurts to a five-year, $255 million extension in April 2023. However, there is little guaranteed money left on Hurts' deal after the 2026 season.

Hurts enters this season with 17,891 passing yards, 110 passing touchdowns, 3,554 rushing yards and 63 rushing touchdowns in his career. He's made the Pro Bowl three times and won Super Bowl LIX MVP against the Kansas City Chiefs.

If Hurts plays well in 2026, the Eagles will make the playoffs again and contend for a Super Bowl. However, if the QB struggles in Mannion's system, Philadelphia will crumble and Hurts may get traded next offseason.

"Jalen's been awesome," Mannion said. "I really think he can do anything we ask of him. He's accurate. He's a great athlete. He really attacks the fundamentals. That's what's been really fun to watch these last two weeks of Phase 2. He's always wanting more things to work on, wanting more things regarding fundamentals, timing, understanding the scheme. He's hungry for more. Those are the guys that are really fun to work with."

The 2026 campaign is not a make-or-break season for Hurts, though, according to GM Howie Roseman.

Philadelphia lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the wild-card round of the playoffs last season, but Roseman doesn't like a guy who is looking to replace Hurts.

"I think the bottom line for us ... is winning football games and all the guy does is win football games," Roseman said during an appearance on 94 WIP on Wednesday. "That includes our head coach [Nick Sirianni] as well.

"For me, the barometer is winning football games. In terms of what Jalen does, he's another guy with a tremendous track record. All he does is go out and play good football. Really excited to have him as our quarterback, excited about this season and what we have going forward, and I know there are a lot of fanbases out there that would love the results we've had with him as our starting quarterback."
