The Eagles have added more depth to the roster amid injuries.
The injuries just keep on coming to the Philadelphia Eagles, and the team has now decided to sign some extra depth.
Amid an ongoing hamstring injury to star running back Saquon Barkley, the Eagles have elected to bring in another back. Philadelphia has signed running back Ian Wheeler to its practice squad, adding more depth all around.
In addition to Barkley, Tanks Bigby is on injured reserve, and Will Shipley is out for a few weeks due to injury. The Eagles' running back room is very thin right now, raising some concern for this offense going forward.
Wheeler played his college football at Howard, playing in 42 career games. In that time, he recorded 3,710 career all-purpose yards, but he went undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The running back signed with the Chicago Bears to their practice squad, but was released shortly after. It remains to be seen if Wheeler will take the field for the Eagles this week as they take on the Carolina Panthers, but given where the team is, it could be possible.
But for now, the Eagles wanted to make sure that they had some depth at the position given all the injuries going on. Philadelphia isn't sure if Barkley will play this week against Carolina, but the veteran didn't practice on Wednesday, indicating that he could be out again this week.
The Eagles have lost three straight games entering this matchup with the Panthers, so the injuries are a tough pill to swallow. And to make matters worse now, quarterback Jalen Hurts is now ruled out for the game against the Panthers due to a scary blood clot situation.
This issue was announced earlier this morning, and Hurts will now miss the upcoming game to deal with his health. Philadelphia won't rush Hurts back, as the health and saferty of the quarterback remains the priority.
Backup Tanner McKee will now lead the Eagles this week against the Panthers, with the team badly needing a win. Philadelphia has to do something to stop the bleeding this week, and they will hope that McKee can get the job done.
But the entire mindset of the organization remains with Hurts, and how this scary situation turns out. For now, the Eagles will hope for the best, while providing their star quarterback with whatever resources he needs.
Kickoff for the game between the Eagles and Panthers is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. PT/1:00 p.m. ET from Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
