The Philadelphia Eagles came away with an impressive divisional win on Sunday, despite not playing their best football.
Look, the Eagles are going to be judged a bit differently than some other teams around the NFL, and while wins are always the main focus, and as I always say, winning in the NFL is tougher than in any league in the world, the process is going to be judged throughout the Eagles' season. The harsh reality is that Philadelphia has played well at times over the past few years, and other times have suggested that this just isn't a team capable of winning a Super Bowl.
Unfortunately, Sunday kind of proved Philadelphia isn't exactly a favorite right now. There are ways to improve that, and it's not necessarily unfair to say that adding a player or two could change things, but the offense definitely raises a fair question about how Philadelphia can improve. Dallas Goedert was great, catching four passes for 77 yards and two touchdowns.
However, much of the talk is still about bringing in another veteran tight end, especially with Eli Stowers banged up.
“Stowers was questionable with a hamstring injury. There had been optimism that he would be eligible to play,” The Athletic’s Zach Berman wrote on X on Saturday. “The quadriceps injury is a new one. He underwent imaging after reporting discomfort. And it was determined he had a strain that will require a weeks-long absence.”
“This also will heighten the speculation about Zach Ertz, who remains a free agent. Ertz is 10 catches behind Harold Carmichael on the franchise’s all-time receptions list. There’s long been interest in a return to Philly,” Berman said.
At this stage of Goedert's career, he's going to continue to be a guy for Philadelphia who is going to make a big impact week in and week out. Regarding Ertz, I question whether he's still that guy. He's dealt with some injuries over the past year or so, which raises questions.
I wouldn't mind bringing him in, but it feels like this could hurt Stowers chances of improving as much as he needs to.
