The Philadelphia Eagles are activating tight end Zach Ertz off the practice squad for their Week 3 clash against the Chicago Bears.
The Philadelphia Eagles will see a franchise legend back on the field in Week 3 against the Chicago Bears, as they activate tight end Zach Ertz from the practice squad.
The Eagles signed Ertz to the practice squad after starting tight end Dallas Goedert went down with a sprained MCL in Week 2, which is expected to keep him out for at least a few weeks.
Philadelphia pivoted to adding Ertz, who is familiar with the franchise, as he spent the first nine years of his career with the Eagles. They drafted him in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, and he became one of the best pass-catchers in franchise history.
Across nine seasons, Ertz hauled in 579 receptions for 6,267 yards and 38 touchdowns. With just 11 more catches, he would become the franchise leader in receptions, passing Harold Carmichael.
While Ertz is 35 years old, he proved in the 2025 season that he can still be a contributing pass catcher, as he had 50 receptions for 504 yards and four touchdowns in 13 games with the Washington Commanders.
USA TODAY SportsHe could be a quality weapon for Jalen Hurts and the passing game, which needs some help. DeVonta Smith has played well in his role as the top receiver, with 13 receptions for 170 yards and a touchdown through two games.
Trade acquisition Dontayvion Wicks has also played well, with seven receptions for 147 yards and a touchdown. However, he hasn't had another reliable weapon, especially with first-round pick Makai Lemon having just four catches for nine yards thus far.
Goedert had played a big role in the offense before his injury, with five receptions for 81 yards and two touchdowns. In his absence, and with the Eagles still waiting for Lemon or another receiver to emerge, Hurts could lean on the veteran Ertz.
Hurts will look to be more efficient and limit turnovers moving forward, as he's completed 64.5 percent of his passes for 467 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions in the 2026 season.
The former Super Bowl MVP has proven he can be one of the best quarterbacks in the league, but he needs to limit turnovers. Adding a player like Ertz, who can serve as a safety valve when he's under pressure, could help Philadelphia's offense take the next step.
While the Eagles are 2-0, it hasn't been clean football, and they will look to be better upon Ertz's return as they take on the Bears.
