Former Eagles Fan Favorite Floated as Option to Return to Philadelphia

As the Philadelphia Eagles continue to make decisions on the remainder of their roster, with players expected to be let go and potentially signed over the next couple of days to weeks, certain positions stand out more than others.

At the tight end position, I actually like what the Eagles have built, but I think there's still an argument to be made that they could bring in another veteran guy who understands the system and the players around him.

Among the players we have seen in Philadelphia fill that role over the past decade or so is Zach Ertz. Ertz hasn't been with the Eagles since 2021, but he was a big piece of the puzzle from 2015 to his final season, when he was traded to the Arizona Cardinals in '21.

According to the latest, Ertz could be the guy to fill the Eagles' problems at tight end. It remains uncertain when he's going to return as he dealt with an injury last year, sustaining an ACL tear, but he'd be a nice addition to Philadelphia if he can be a shell of his old self.

“Who might that player to be named later be? Zach Ertz has a chance to fill the Eagles’ void at tight end with a potential return on the table, according to league sources. Nothing is imminent as the 35-year-old is nearing the nine-month mark of recovery from a scary knee injury suffered on Dec. 7, but Ertz would welcome a return to the Eagles for his 14th season.

“He was cleared for football activities earlier this month, although the nine-month benchmark coming next week is often a timeline teams will abide by when assessing a player coming off an ACL tear,” EJ Smith wrote.

In 2025, Ertz impressed with the Washington Commanders. He posted 504 yards on 50 receptions, good for 10.1 yards per catch. He also added four touchdowns after posting seven the year prior.
