Hurts has to realize he needs to take blame, too.
It just wasn't a great game for anybody on the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, ultimately losing to the Jacksonville Jaguars, 19-17.
After leading late in the fourth quarter, the Eagles had a chance to win, but quarterback Trevor Lawrence made a great throw to Parker Washington for a 27-yard touchdown to take a 16-14 lead with 3 minutes and change left to play.
The Eagles then drove downfield and set up a 48-yard field goal for Jake Elliott, who put it through the uprights to take a 17-16 lead.
Unfortunately, the Eagles couldn't get a stop right after, and Jacksonville then drove down the field to win the game with no time remaining. This was as disappointing a loss as anyone could have imagined for Philadelphia, with some even suggesting changes are needed.
It also sounds like some players were very frustrated in the locker room, perhaps the most concerning sign of all. If guys start to turn on each other, there are going to be some big problems for this organization.
As for the players, quarterback Jalen Hurts even seemed a bit upset. Hurts has kept his feelings to himself throughout his career, even when frustrated. However, it has to feel like something is deeply wrong if he came out and made those comments after Sunday's loss.
"Ultimately, that's not my place," Hurts stated, implying that that call came from Sirianni, H/T Heavy.
"Again, that's not my place, and I'm prepared as a quarterback to not worry about those things. I'm honoring the play call, honoring the things that are coming in the game. When I'm up at night, I think about should I have said something? Should I have took a step back and say wait? But ultimately, there's a commitment to going out there and executing, so this was one where it didn't work in our favor."
While I understand what Hurts is trying to say here, he ultimately doesn't have any say in coaching decisions, I also think he needs to look in the mirror a bit.
Saying he played his best game would be unfair, because Hurts couldn't do much on offense to get a win. He was 21of 44 for 220 yards and one touchdown, and he had only two carries for two yards. He hasn't been the quarterback fans have hoped for over the first five weeks of the season, and that's deeply disappointing.
Football that everybody needs him to.
