Among the many things the Philadelphia Eagles have to figure out over the next few weeks, what they want to do at their backup quarterback position might be at the top of the list. The Eagles, fortunately, have done a really good job under center.
There's a reason Howie Roseman continues to value the position, and it doesn't look like that's going to change anytime soon.
However, with Andy Dalton and Tanner McKee, there's a scenario in which Philadelphia wants to move on from one of those guys.
There probably isn't much of a reason to have both of them on the roster, unless they don't have much trust in one of those guys. In that event, it would make even less sense to ask one of them to get the job done if Hurts were to go down.
According to ESPN's New York Jets insider, while New York is giving Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik a chance to be the QB2, there's a possibility New York will go out and land a veteran option. He listed Dalton as a potential option.
“The Jets are giving Klubnik every opportunity to win the No. 2 job, which could be risky for Glenn, who needs to win games this season. If Smith is felled by a major injury, could the offense function with a rookie at the helm?
“Perhaps general manager Darren Mougey will try to trade for a veteran backup, but that's a tricky endeavor because teams aren't looking to sell off competent quarterbacks. Their personnel department is monitoring the QB landscape,” Rich Cimini wrote. “The Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles, both of whom have four quarterbacks, are teams to watch. Could Mason Rudolph shake free in Pittsburgh? Andy Dalton in Philly?”
Reports had indicated in the past that the Eagles really liked what McKee has given them, and considering he's much younger than Dalton, it isn't the worst idea to keep the young one around.
However, the Eagles will have to figure that out. If Philadelphia can get a decent return for either player, it's best to move on from whoever it can get the most for.
