The Philadelphia Eagles could be without newly acquired edge rusher Jonathan Greenard, a very unfortunate situation for all involved. Greenard, arguably the biggest addition for the Eagles this offseason, is expected to have a major impact on this defense next season.
As of right now, it sounds like it remains uncertain whether Greenard will even practice during training camp.
While I hope that isn't the case, and the Eagles do as well, it doesn't sound like the decision-makers in Philadelphia are too worried about the situation at the moment.
In fact, general manager Howie Roseman came out and said that he knows Greenard is going to be ready to play this season, and while he wants him on the field at some point in training camp or before the start of the regular season, he understands that the bigger priority is keeping a guy like him healthy.
“One of the things that we know about Greenard is he’s going to be ready to play,” Roseman said, per The Athletic.
“Training camp’s so important, practice is so important, but when you have a guy like that who prepares the way he does, who has the experience in the NFL the way he does, you know he’s going to be ready to play when we start the season. We want to be smart with all our guys and get them ready, but at the same time acknowledge the process that they have to take to make sure that they are 100 percent when they come back. This is not a long-term injury. This is nothing we’re concerned about.”
Greenard is coming off a very productive season, but there's an argument to be made that he's been better throughout other parts of his career. Still only 29 years old, and recently turning 29, this is a guy who posted 12.5 sacks and 12 sacks in 2023 and 2024.
The Eagles are hopeful that he'll get back to those marks, and there's really no reason for him not to with how good this defense is around him. Greenard should benefit from playing with some other very good players, and the same can be said for other guys on the Eagles' defense.
