The Philadelphia Eagles are still early in their offensive coordinator search, but there are many different factors to consider about the future.
After a season that went as badly as anyone could’ve expected on that side of the basketball, the Eagles are expected to be all in on figuring it out.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Eagles’ decision to move on from Kevin Patullo as offensive coordinator comes with a catch, and it’s that Patullo could return to the team in a different position.
“We'll start with the Philadelphia Eagles, who made the decision to remove Kevin Patullo as the offensive coordinator,” Rapoport said. “Has not been fired. Could in fact end up staying with Nick Sirianni as a lieutenant as he has been every year before this year. A sounding board, someone for advice, someone for game management. That has really become Kevin Patullo's specialty with the Philadelphia Eagles.
“They decided to make him a coordinator this year. Just simply didn't work out. Just wasn't good enough. The offense was non-functional. It was a source of frustration the entire year. Kevin Patullo out as OC. I would expect the Eagles to swing big. I would also expect them to maybe not go with something Sirianni has done before. A little bit of a clean break there.”
While Patullo didn’t work out, it doesn’t feel like the Eagles are pushing him completely out the building or blaming him for everything.
At the same time, Rapoport’s reporting suggests the Eagles aren’t interested in running it back with a familiar formula.
After an offense that often looked as bad as it did, Nick Sirianni will be tasked with figuring out who he wants to coach, and per Rapoport, the Eagles will do is in a big way, or at least try to.
The Eagles know the roster is talented enough to compete at the highest level, and wasting another year of prime play from their stars won’t be something we should see.
Whether Patullo stays on as a coach or eventually moves elsewhere, it’s at least a positive that he won’t be around for the future calling plays.
