Could the Eagles really trade star running back Saquon Barkley?
The Philadelphia Eagles are entering Week 6 of the NFL season in a tough spot.
After a 2-0 start to the season, the Eagles have dropped three straight games, looking rough in the process. Philadelphia has been hit hard with injuries this season, especially on the offensive side of the ball, and it's continued each week.
Injuries to star running back Saquon Barkley, wide receiver DeVonta Smith, and quarterback Jalen Hurts have all hit the Eagles hard, limiting what this team can do on the field. And as the Eagles get ready for Week 6 against the Carolina Panthers, they will be missing both Barkley and Hurts.
Hurts is the scariest of the injuries, with the veteran quarterback dealing with a blood clot issue. If he can't get back on the field soon, the Eagles could be in some real trouble, even beyond this season, but the first priority is his health.
Philadelphia seems to be in free-fall right now, and this could cause some drastic measures to take place. And with the NFL trade deadline coming up, the Eagles could be one of the more actives teams across the league.
According to NFL insider Jonathan Jones of The Athletic, there are some executives around the league who have floated the idea of the Eagles trading Barkley. Philadelphia is in a weird place right now, and there have been rumors about multiple stars across the team this year.
The idea of trading away Barkley is an interesting one, especially since the Eagles just won the Super Bowl a few years ago. But it's a situation that the team may have to address if injuries and poor play were to continue.
Barkley hasn't played as well as he did in 2024, and the Eagles may still be able to get something of value for him. The veteran back has dealt with injuries as well, which could push the Eagles to move in a different direction.
Even this season, Barkley has only rushed for 182 yards, going in and out of games before his hamstring injury. Barkley and the Eagles may welcome a change, but this remains to be seen.
If the Eagles do drop a few more games, it could see the front office look to go into a reset for this season, with the view being on 2027. While this is the extreme of what Philadelphia wants to do, it could make some sense.
