Philadelphia Eagles Bring in Familiar Face for Workout cover image

The Philadelphia Eagles are on the hunt for more help for quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Six-year veteran wide receiver and former Eagle, Quez Watkins, is getting brought to Philadelphia for a workout in hopes of adding more depth to the Eagles receiver room, Heavy.com reporter Matt Lombardo wrote.

The Eagles already have one of the deepest receiver cores in the league, led by the dynamic duo of DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown. Not only that, Philadelphia traded for Jahan Dotson before last season began, and he has served as a viable option.

In an effort to add more, the Eagles had also added John Metchie from the Houston Texans before the season’s start.

Watkins coming into town on a workout is interesting, though. The Eagles already have receivers Terrace Marshall and Elijah Cooks, but adding Watkins, who has a history with the franchise – and with Hurts, may make sense.

It’s been a long road for the veteran to return to the NFL. After he left the Eagles after the 2023 season, he attempted to make the Pittsburgh Steelers, but failed to make the roster.

During this past training camp, Watkins attempted to make the Arizona Cardinals but ultimately was released due to an injury settlement.

Now Watkins hopes to return to the team that gave him a shot in the first place, after drafting him in the sixth round of the 2020 Draft.

In his four years with the Eagles, Watkins was known for his big play ability, his speed, and his ability to play in the slot, helping the Eagles to make Super Bowl 57, when they fell to the Chiefs.

He amassed 1,249 career yards through the air, with his career high being 647 in his second season. Not only that, he registered six career touchdowns.

For Watkins, it opens the door to a possible reunion with the team that initially believed in him and knows what he can do. Reliable is his game, and if needed, he can step onto the gridiron and pick up where he left off.

It could also be a move to get the most out of Brown, who opened the season on a dreadful note with just one reception for eight yards.

Brown has defended Watkins in the past, most notably on a Barstool Sports show with Eagles superfan Gillie the Kid, in which Gillie had a spat with Watkins after a pivotal loss.

“I want to defend Quez. Quez don’t get the ball all game, and only time he get the ball is when the game is on the line. That’s a lot of pressure.”

Could a reunion be in the works? If Watkins re-signs with the Eagles, what happens after? Does he go to the practice squad?

Only time will tell, but it will be good to have a familiar face who knows the roster and the staff during the season.
