Philadelphia Eagles Coach Gets High Honor cover image

The NFL announced exciting news for a Philadelphia Eagles coach.

Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio was named a finalist for the Associated Press NFL Assistant Coach of the Year Award on Thursday.

This is the second year in a row Fangio has been up for the honor after finishing fourth last year.

Philadelphia's defense finished fifth in the NFL in scoring defense this season, giving up only 19.1 points per game. The Eagles' 56.8% completion percentage allowed led the league, while their 75.4 passer rating ranked second.

Under Fangio, second-year players Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean earned first-team All-Pro honors as two of the best defensive backs in the NFL.

The winner of the NFL's Assistant Coach of the Year Award will be announced at the NFL Honors on Thursday, February 5. The other finalists are Minnesota Vikings DC Brian Flores, Denver Broncos DC Vance Joseph, Seattle Seahawks Klint Kubiak and New Orleans Patriots OC Josh McDaniels.

The Eagles won the NFC East again this season. However, they lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the Wild Card Round of the 2026 NFL playoffs. Philadelphia failed to defend its Super Bowl title despite its defense being elite.

Why did the Eagles struggle this season? Well, their offense was below average under OC Kevin Patullo, who was fired after just one year.

This season under Patullo, scoring dropped from 27.2 (ranked seventh) to 22.3 (19th) points per game; offensive efficiency dipped from fourth best in the league to 19th; and the rushing attack plummeted from 179 yards per game (2nd) to 116.9 (18th).

As long as the Eagles hire a solid OC, they will be a Super Bowl contender again next season. After all, Fangio's defense isn't going anywhere.

The new OC has to work well with QB Jalen Hurts, who finished with 3,224 passing yards, 25 passing touchdowns, 421 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns this season. Hurts and Patullo didn't have a good relationship.
