As the Philadelphia Eagles look for ways to retool their offense heading into the upcoming offseason, they were recently linked to a very intriguing name who could make sense as an A.J. Brown replacement.
FanSided’s Sayre Bedinger recently urged the Eagles to pursue wide receiver George Pickens if the Dallas Cowboys are unable to figure out his long-term future, adding that there are financial issues in Dallas and Philadelphia could use another wide receiver if it moves on from Brown, or even if it doesn’t, as the team currently stands.
Pickens, who is set to hit free agency if the Cowboys don’t figure something out before then, is expected to get elite receiver money.
“One of the top players set to hit free agency in just over a month is Dallas Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens,” Bedinger wrote. “Pickens is expected to command a salary north of $30 million per season, and it's fair to wonder – after they drew such a hard line in the sand with Micah Parsons – how far the Cowboys will actually be willing to go to keep Pickens around.”
The Eagles have invested a ton in offensive playmakers during the Howie Roseman era, building one of the best units in the NFL led by Jalen Hurts. However, with a tough year last season, adding another star WR makes some sense.
“The expectation right now is that he will be back with Dallas,” Bedinger added, “but if the Cowboys can't get a true contract extension done with Pickens, tagging him will be tough. They are almost $32 million in the red on this year's salary cap. Teams have gotten out of far worse holes, but with so many other players to take care of and needs to address, would the Cowboys really allocate that much of the salary cap pie to Pickens?”
From Philadelphia’s standpoint, the idea is obvious on paper. Pickens brings so much of what a team would want, as long as he can keep hishead on straight.
We’ll see what happens with the Cowboys and if anything goes on from there. The Cowboys should look to keep him, but it’s tough to trust Jerry Jones.
