The Philadelphia Eagles could lose DC Vic Fangio.
According to multiple reports, Fangio could retire from the NFL.
Fangio is one of the best defensive minds in the NFL. If he leaves the Eagles, that would be a huge loss for the organization.
Philadelphia's defense finished fifth in the NFL in scoring defense this season, giving up only 19.1 points per game. The Eagles' 56.8% completion percentage allowed led the league, while their 75.4 passer rating ranked second.
Under Fangio, second-year players Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean earned first-team All-Pro honors as two of the best defensive backs in the NFL.
Fangio is a finalist for the Associated Press NFL Assistant Coach of the Year Award. This is the second year in a row Fangio has been up for the honor after finishing fourth last year.
The winner of the NFL's Assistant Coach of the Year Award will be announced at the NFL Honors on Thursday, February 5. The other finalists are Minnesota Vikings DC Brian Flores, Denver Broncos DC Vance Joseph, Seattle Seahawks Klint Kubiak and New Orleans Patriots OC Josh McDaniels.
The Eagles won the NFC East again this season. However, they lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the Wild Card Round of the 2026 NFL playoffs. Philadelphia failed to defend its Super Bowl title despite its defense being elite.
Fangio has been in the NFL since 1986. He was at Stanford for one season in 2010 before coming back to the pros in 2011.
Fangio has worked for the New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, Indianapolis Colts, Houston Texans, Baltimore Ravens, 49ers, Chicago Bears, Denver Broncos, Eagles and Miami Dolphins.
If Fangio retires, the Eagles could reunite with Jim Schwartz, who ran the defense in Philadelphia from 2016-2020. Schwartz was a finalist for the Cleveland Browns' head coaching job. He's not expected to return to Cleveland.
