There's a sense that the Philadelphia Eagles are going to be more of a pass-first offense this season, at least if things go as planned. Sean Mannion will have to decide whether he wants to rely heavily on guys like Saquon Barkley and Jalen Hurts to make plays with their legs, or if he wants to have a nice little mixture of both.
To me, the offense would be best if he focuses on the run and allows Hurts to make the necessary passes that all quarterbacks need to make to succeed in the NFL, but only time will tell how much pressure he wants to put on those two guys.
With how talented the wide receiver room is right now, there's a feeling that the Eagles are going to be very good on that front.
For Barkley, who is arguably coming off his worst season in the NFL when healthy, he also has some big questions to answer.
Not only does he have a real opportunity to be effective as a runner, but he also recognizes that he's going to do things in the pass game. Instead of shying away from all that pressure and touches, he's actually looking forward to it.
“Definitely gives you a lot of advantages, especially when you’re able to marry it up with everything else,” Barkley said, per NBCS Philly. “For me, I feel like I have a chance to be really good in this system too. I’ve seen it from afar but now actually studying it and working it and trying to put myself in the system, I feel like it’s going to open up some things that I may not have been able to show as much in my career. I’m excited for that.”
“I believe so,” Barkley said. “I like the way that our protection is. Kind of friendly to the running back. I feel like it might give me a little bit more opportunity to get out and be involved in the pass game.”
This is a really good sign that not only does Barkley want to do this, but that everybody seems to be on the same page right now. The Eagles offense didn't give me that feeling last season, which is part of the reason why I think the unit struggled the way that it did.
