After what was a very disappointing season for the Philadelphia Eagles on the offensive side of the football last season, it's only fair to wonder how much different things are going to look this year. Instead of the Eagles being content with how things looked with Kevin Patullo, the organization decided to make a swift change by bringing in Sean Mannion.
Mannion, who will be tasked with figuring out an offense that has a lot of talent, perhaps just as much as any in the NFL, should find himself in a good spot if things go as planned. The only thing the Eagles really have to answer here is whether their guys play up to the standard that we all expect them to week in and week out.
While I understand that Patullo wasn't the answer last year, I did also feel like some of the players on the Eagles' roster just simply weren't as good as we expected them to be last season.
If there's one thing that already seems to be different than things were a year ago, however, it's the fact that Mannion has said a lot of the right things. Instead of beating around the bush, he continues to suggest that this team is competing at a very high level and he likes what he sees early on.
"Yeah, I think the biggest thing we want is just great effort every day and then compete," Mannion said, per The Athletic. "You know, there's a big thing coming in, coming into this camp for us is every day is high-level competition and competing against yourself for a role on the roster. And again, competing against the defense every day is going to make us better and better. And then I think for us offensively, it's, 'Hey, can we have a really sound pre-snap operation?'
"Those are some of the things early in camp Day 1 we struggled with a little bit. I thought there was improvement Day 2. And then just assignment alignment execution: are we getting lined up properly, are we not having mental errors? And so through the first two days of practice, it's still early, but I'm happy with the progress we've made. We just got to keep improving from there."
I think one thing that's important for Eagles fans to recognize is that there are going to be some struggles early on from this organization offensively. Even if the Eagles come out and look better offensively than they did a year ago, there's actually no debate that they're going to be better throughout a lot of the season.
The Eagles have a lot of things they're trying to put in place, and as a result, we might see some struggles early on.
Even if things aren't going as planned in something like training camp or the preseason games, I wouldn't get too worried just yet. Philadelphia is trying to build a completely different offense than it has had in recent years, something that takes time.
