Stephen A. Smith Blasts Eagles' Defense, Not Offense cover image

It wasn’t a good Black Friday game for the Philadelphia Eagles against the Chicago Bears.

With all of the questions about the Eagles’ offense, the defense was perhaps the bigger issue, getting absolutely blown up against D’Andre Swift, Kyle Monangai and the Bears’ run game.

However, while the Eagles didn’t do what they had to do on the defensive side of the football, it’s also fair to mention that the team still only gave up 24 points.

We can look at the process as a bigger issue, and giving up as many yards as they did on the ground is typically never going to lead to success, but I have a tough time agreeing with what Stephen A. Smith had to say.

"Here's what you all need to know. You understand that these two games, the Eagles have given up 898 yards of offense to the Cowboys and the Bears in the last two games. This is a Vic Fangio defense so we know the problems they have offensively even though A.J. Brown got the ball 10 times, 132 yards, two touchdowns.

“He was balling, but they were still getting booed at halftime when you turn over the ball on the Tush Push, that's pretty damn bad. But here's the point, we didn't expect their defense to collapse either. We knew about the problems offensively, but to come have Chicago roll up to the site of Lincoln Financial Field, for D'Andre Swift the former Philadelphia Eagles with relatives in attendance running up shawl all over them,” he said.

While I understand what Smith is saying here, and he’s not wrong in his thinking, the Eagles only scored 15 points. I don’t care how many rushing yards a teams give up. When a team in the NFL scores 15 points, although the Eagles did win by scoring fewer than that over two of the past three weeks prior to this game, it typically isn’t going to end as well as anybody would hope for.

Look, it’s evident that things aren’t ideal for the Eagles right now.

We saw that against the Dallas Cowboys and the Bears, but this has been a problem for a bit longer than this. I still love this defense and believe it’s arguably the best unit in the NFL, but they’ll have to answer some questions as well.
