Despite rumors and his expiring contract, the veteran wants to be here.
While there seems to be a consensus that the Philadelphia Eagles are going to move on from Super Bowl-winning cornerback Tariq Woolen, he recently spoke to reporters, and it doesn't sound as certain as we think.
From Howie Roseman's perspective, moving on from Woolen makes a ton of sense. He signed a one-year deal during the offseason, hoping to increase his value after struggling with the Seattle Seahawks over the past couple of years.
At one point, Woolen was considered among the best corners in the NFL, but he started to struggle a lot after starring earlier in his career. As a result, the Eagles and other teams in the league saw him as a decent option to take a chance on, and Philadelphia won the sweepstakes on that one-year deal.
It would make sense to move on from a guy like that, considering that he's going to leave anyway in the offseason. However, when speaking to reporters, it doesn't sound like Woolen has been told he's getting traded yet, unless he's trying to keep those conversations private.
"You hear (the trade rumors), but nobody knows the truth," Woolen said, per Yahoo. "You guys on social media and whatever news outlet, y'all can say a million things, but y'all really wouldn't know until you get a talk with the GM and you get a talk with your coach.
"So, other than that, I mean, you can see me going to any team, or you can hear anything about me going to team, but to me, that doesn't matter, just because I'm here every day working with these guys."
It's very possible Woolen was asked not to come out and say the Eagles are looking to move on from him, even if other teams around the league already know that. The reason being is that saying that he's available is only going to lower his trade value.
In the offseason, I thought Woolen was one of the more intriguing additions to this Eagles roster.
There was obviously hope that he'd eventually return to the player he was in other parts of his career, and I don't want to say he's done that. However, Woolen has also had some promising moments in Philadelphia, so I don't want to say the one-year deal was a total waste.
It feels like a risk that was worth taking, and if the season had gone differently from a health perspective, the Eagles likely would have found themselves in a much different position.
There's also something to be said about Woolen making these comments. Perhaps he wants to stay in Philadelphia and is willing to figure out a contract next spring and summer.
