The Atlanta Falcons start their season on Sunday.
The Atlanta Falcons begin their season on Sunday and the start of the Kevin Stefanski era which fans hope is gonna bring a whole lot more success than the last decade for the franchise has.
Stefanski has announced who will be the starting quarterback last Monday after an offseason of questions, and with all other position battles working themselves out, all that's left to do is play football. The first game of the season is a road trip up north to face the Pittsburgh Steelers, and while it's a very tough assignment to begin a year with, this is not a game for the Falcons that is un-winnable by any means.
Here are the three keys to victory for Atlanta to leave Pittsburgh with a victory.
Limit Steelers Elite Pass Rush Unit
This may be the most important thing the Falcons need to do in order to have a strong showing today. Obviously, this conversation starts with T.J. Watt and for good reason, because he is one of the best pass rushers of the generation and is still at the top of his game.
Watt is flanked by guys like Alex Highsmith and Nick Herbig, both of whom are extremely productive when it comes to making quarterbacks uncomfortable themselves. For someone like Tua Tagovailoa who has a tendency to take sacks and gets a little bit flustered, getting the ball out quickly is going to be key.
If Atlanta can neutralize this unit at least a little bit, it will go a long way towards getting a win.
Make Aaron Rodgers Uncomfortable
Just as importantly as protecting Tagovailoa and getting the ball out is not giving one of the best quarterbacks in the history of the game all day to pick apart the defense. Pass rush is one of the biggest question marks for Atlanta due to Jalon Walker's injury and James Pearce Jr.'s suspension, so other guys will have to step up.
If Rodgers has a ton of time to make plays, he is going to beat you.
He won't move around the way he used to at the start of his final season in the league, but Rodgers can still sling it with the best of them. The Falcons must make his job a little bit harder.
Avoid Turnovers
Perhaps this is another obvious one, but a vintage Tagovailoa performance like he had several times last year with multiple interceptions or miscues with snaps that result in fumbles are not something Atlanta is equipped to overcome.
If Tagovailoa can manage the game and be able to hold onto the ball, the Falcons are going to have a whole lot better of a chance to win.
