The Atlanta Falcons could make the decision to place this UDFA on the roster.

The Atlanta Falcons are just a couple of weeks away from the start of the season now having played two preseason games and inching closer to having to make final decisions with regards to the roster.

Much of the focus from the fanbase has been on the quarterback battle which will continue to be the case as Michael Penix Jr. returns to the field healthy, but there are numerous other positional competitions playing out as well. One of them is for the third running back behind Bijan Robinson and Brian Robinson Jr., and a name has emerged this summer who no one saw coming.

Former Georgia Bulldogs star Cash Jones was signed to the team as an undrafted free agent, and while he still has a ways to go to unseat both Nate Carter and Tyler Goodson, his pass catching ability and potential special teams impact could give him a real shot to make this roster.

Jones Has Impressed Falcons Staff Throughout Summer

Jones did not just have 41 yards on seven receptions in the victory over the Indianapolis Colts this past weekend, he also was the team's leading receiver with 62 yards on four receptions catching all four targets for a long touchdown as well.

Given his versatility and the fact that he can do multiple things, Jones may have a leg up over guys like Carter and Goodson, and if the team elects to carry four running backs, it would be tough for Atlanta to justify letting him go.

In an ideal world, he could keep developing on the practice squad, but the risk you run there is having to place him on waivers in order to bring him back. After his latest performance, the chances of Jones going unclaimed may not be great as teams across the league search for running back depth.

At the end of the day, the best football players need to fill out these final spots, and Jones may not be the best running back available, but he does have a strong case at best football player.

Some tough calls are going to be made over the coming weeks by Kevin Stefanski and the staff, and what to do with Jones is rising up that list of difficulty. Fans will eagerly await to hear the status of the former Bulldog fan favorite in the next week or two as roster cutdowns continue.
