The Atlanta Falcons may be trending towards a starter.
The Atlanta Falcons are moving through training camp, and despite the fact that so much was made of the quarterback battle at the start of camp, it really has not been much of a battle at all so far.
Atlanta was insistent that until Michael Penix Jr. was healthy, the battle could not really begin, and it turned out that he was a whole lot less healthy than fans had hoped at the outset of camp. Despite dealing with an early minor back injury of his own, this has allowed Tua Tagovailoa to command the significant bulk of the first team reps once he returned from injury.
After some initial struggles, it sounds like Tagovailoa is really starting to make an impression on this coaching staff as he gets more accustomed to the operation the Falcons are trying to run. Atlanta quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt offered a glimpse into what the staff is thinking as they watch him continue to grow.
Falcons Coaches Impressed by Tagovailoa So Far
"He's getting better every day," Van Pelt told Falcons.com. "The biggest thing you can tell is that he is a veteran...If a defense makes a mistake, he can see that...I think he's becoming more comfortable with the system and the play calls and protection adjustments and everything.
"It's always tough coming into a new system. So, [he's] picking that up. Missing the first part of camp set him back just a little bit, but really the last three or four days he's really come on."
While Tagovailoa has not exactly lit the world on fire so far in camp, it does not sound like that's what the coaching staff is looking for. He needs to simply be an effective distributor to the offense's impressive group of weapons as well as taking care of the football and avoiding sacks.
This can sometimes be easier said than done, but starter for Atlanta is going to be determined by trust, and it sounds like Tagovailoa is beginning to lay the foundation for earning the trust of the coaching staff.
Ultimately, if Penix is not fully healthy and clear until right before the season begins or even longer, the Falcons are not going to have much of a choice when it comes to who they are going to start Week 1.
By the sounds of it though, Tagovailoa is doing a nice job taking advantage of the opportunity he's being given right now in camp, and that's all the coaching staff can ask for.
