The Atlanta Falcons have the potential to win a whole lot of games.

The Atlanta Falcons earned their biggest victory perhaps in years on Thursday night with a complete dismantling of the Green Bay Packers to avoid an 0-3 start to the year and create some serious momentum.

Headed into next week, it's a mini bye for Atlanta coming off a Thursday night game into Monday night, so while they want to get right back to work following such a great performance, the opportunity to get better also presents itself. Michael Penix Jr. was the story of the night, and he should keep getting more comfortable every week.

With that being said, the most encouraging development from this game was not even Penix, it was a defensive performance which was as good as it gets from a unit that was questioned a whole lot this week.

Falcons Defense Had Legitimate Shutdown Performance

While Green Bay was able to make the total yardage numbers look a little bit better in the fourth quarter after the game was already very much out of reach, this was a showing from the defense that would translate against any offense in football.

The unit looked a whole lot more like the group that made future First Ballot Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers look completely washed up in Week 1 rather than the group that was absolutely ripped by Bryce Young in Week 2. With a ferocious pass rush that seemed to be all over Jordan Love all night and forcing bad throws, this was the kind of formula that can win Atlanta a ton of games in 2026.

Penix managing the game, running the ball down the opponent's throat, and being able to make the opposing offense out of synch and uncomfortable is the formula for this team to win games. That formula played out absolutely perfectly in the first of three primetime games with a massive one against the New Orleans Saints up next.

As the Saints have played some great second half offense, the defense will once again have to step up and provide support for the offense. The kind of complimentary football that was seen this week is what this team needs to do moving forward.

If the defense really is that effective, the Falcons could be the team to beat in the NFC South. Next week will reveal a ton, but for the moment, Atlanta should enjoy their victory over the Packers.
