The Atlanta Falcons head coach knows it wasn't good enough.
The Atlanta Falcons have begun the Kevin Stefanski era on a sour note and now sit at 0-1 after being defeated by the Pittsburgh Steelers on the road with a largely disastrous quarterback situation.
While many may be willing to give the team and the coaching staff some slack after losing its perceived starting quarterback two days before the game, Stefanski is not looking at things that way.
After the loss, Stefanski was clearly frustrated with the way the team played especially on the offensive side of the ball both in the category of turnovers as well as penalties including the holding which negated a touchdown for Zachariah Branch.
Stefanski Frustrated with Performance from Offense
"You can't turn it over twice, one for a touchdown," Stefanski told 92.9 The Game after the loss. "The penalties are very frustrating...we gotta pride ourselves on being better and those are Week 1 lessons that you have to learn in this league and then turn right around for a big division game at home next week."
Interestingly, Stefanski did offer some significant praise to the way the team played in the defensive side of the ball, and the unit did keep them in the game.
It is telling though for him to be so honest about the way the offense played, because losing the turnover battle on the road with an inexperienced quarterback is never going to be a recipe for success in this league.
With the Carolina Panthers coming to town next week, things are going to have to change quickly if Atlanta is going to avoid an 0-2 start. While the Panthers did lose and show massive issues on the defensive side of the ball which could soften what the Falcons are going up against, they also scored almost 40 points against a contending Bears team.
No matter who is at quarterback for Atlanta this week, he is going to have his work cut out for him when it comes to keeping up with the offense on the other side of the field.
Stefanski and the coaching staff will get right to work in terms of fixing the issues that lost this team the game on Sunday. As a veteran coach, he knows that turnovers and penalties -- especially when deficient at the most important position on the field -- will lose you games.
Time will tell if they can fix it or not.
